Scorpion Sails
Design Notes
Having campaigned Scorpions for some years we constantly keep abreast of
developments and new ideas. Our current design is based on the use of the M7
mast and the fully adjustable, raking rig, now commonly used.
The jib is a bow-tack design (though rear-tack versions are available), which
is fairly powerful with extra area cut into the leach. The entry angle is
designed to be constant throughout the height of the sail and requires
adjustable sheeting angles to obtain the best performance. If required multiple
clew eyes can be fitted.
The mainsail is designed with centreline sheeting in mind, either using a
hoop or bridle system. The mast requires a small amount of pre-bend to obtain
the best light wind sail shape. We use the freedom in the rules to cut extra
area in the roach, between the head and the top batten, thereby increasing the
efficiency of the upper part of the main. The sail can be either loose or lens
footed , with either slug slider at the clew or a standard cringle.
Spinnakers come in two sizes; a medium sized radial clewed design or a large
(near maximum) sized crosscut. All sails can be fitted with downhaul patches if
required. Sail numbers are included and can be drawn on to save weight.
